Extend your primary colors to make earth tones with a life-giving vibe all their own! Whether light or deep, earth tones are complex and gorgeous with subtle undertones and mood-setting qualities. In this example, we use watercolors to make our earth tone swatches, but these colors can also be rendered in oil paint or acrylics.
The palette in this video consists of Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium, and Thalo Blue. Our paper selection for this project is the Grumbacher Watercolor 8×8 Pad cut down into four pieces for our swatches. As an alternative, you can use our pads with the In & Out feature to make a swatch outside of the pad and to return it back into the binding to create a swatch journal.
Simply mixing color to create earth tones has a meditative feel. Are you inspired? Give it a try, and use #grumbacherart on Instagram to show us your favorites! Or join us in a discussion on our Grumbacher Artist Club Facebook Group.
